” The interplay is distinguished by a fair degree of concentration in large quantities of succeeding events: no room for lingering silences here, though one clearly detects the attention with which the players listen to each other….. sounds crunchily lumpy, positively appetizing and rather nonconventional in spite of the customariness of the instruments utilized. In “Wall Of Horns”, Birchall extracts infinitesimal particles of feedback and iridescent picked droplets as Brice’s arco spreads harmonics all over the place, moulding frequencies until they sound like drunken flutes; Marks counterpoints with charming snippets of assorted percussive belongings…. Focused listeners are challenged without resorting to gratuitous aggressiveness, thus allowing a more than partial comprehension of the mechanisms lying at the basis of the instrumental interaction.”

Birchall/Cheetham Duo

‘Tipping Point’ CDr

MIE Music is very excited to announce the first release in its new CDr series ‘TIPPING POINT’ by the Birchall/Cheetham Duo. Andrew and David met when they performed as part of Rhys Chatham’s G3 ensemble in Manchester early 2011 which MIE put on. Since then they have developed a sound exploring the deconstruction of rock music within the wider context of free improvisation. Both musicians are committed to the exploration of dynamics, texture, tone and rhythm. TIPPING POINT is the culmination of endless jamming and working deep into each others psyche, delving into the dark corridors of their deconstructed improv drone-rock.

“Drums & guitar riffing improv” The Wire

“Andrew Cheetham and David Birchall create a psychedelic maelstrom of sound that threatens to atomise your walls” Mojo

“The duo has a great artistic empathy going on between them that gives birth to some fantastically fucked up jams on here.” Was Ist Das

“While the pair may appear to be locked into a sort of bendy, elastic conflict to begin with, gradually they reveal themselves to be working in immaculate musical parallel. Dynamic change is always impending, the two embark brilliantly on gradual arcs both up and down: descending into crazed mumbles of dissonance and quivering drum roll, and rising again into squawks of broken guitar strums and the more assertive flourishes of snare and ride.”

Stuckometer

‘Rainbow Beads Excretion’ CDr

The first recordings from phase three Stuckometer (David Birchall and Karl Sveinsson on guitars). Two mammoth jams (32:41 and 26:10), recorded really sweetly by in-house producer Sveinsson, with a guitar in each channel and Pascal driving his traps straight through the middle.

Drooping Eyelid Octet

‘Spectre Inspector (visiting prescence)’ Cdr

Recorded in St. Margaret’s church, Manchester, the ensemble formerly known as the Open Eye Quartet filled the temple with a resonant and solemn invocation. The spirits of those buried in the cemetery around the church rose up as one and entered the building, wresting control of the music from its players (Dave Birchall on guitar, Joincey on Bass, Kelly Jones on flute and Pascal Nichols on drums) , twisting the sound into unearthly shapes to beam phantasmal radiance into the by-now gaping third eyes of all in attendance. That’s the last I remember. When we came to, bleary and confused, we found ourselves each a stone lighter, and cured of any ailments that had previously befallen us. The spirits were gone, and all that was left was this recording.
